Every year on 21 October, International Heat Pump Day puts the spotlight on the technology that is quietly taking over from the boiler in the basement. Viessmann is marking the date in Germany with around 60 information events and trade fair appearances, aimed at homeowners who would rather put their questions to a specialist in person than read another brochure.

Questions that are easier to ask face to face

Will a heat pump work in my house? What do I need to watch when I replace my heating? Which solution fits the conditions on site? These are the questions Viessmann wants to answer around the day of action. The conversation does not stop at the heat pump itself. The company's climate experts also talk about the connected system around it: photovoltaics on the roof, a battery in the utility room and an energy manager that makes the parts work together. Viessmann sums up its approach in one line: every day is heat pump day, and the international date simply makes that visible.

Classrooms, info days and trade fairs

The programme comes in three formats. Heat pump classrooms run at many Viessmann branches, regional information events bring the subject closer to home, and trade fair appearances cover several regions of Germany. On 21 October itself, classrooms take place in regions including Munich, Kempten, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Münster, Koblenz, Herford, Düsseldorf, Köln-Bonn, Dortmund and Ederbergland.

The calendar does not end on the day. Some dates came earlier, for example in Kassel, Freiburg, Münster, Mannheim and Ulm, and further events follow afterwards, among them Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, Karlsruhe, Siegen, Trier and Leipzig. Viessmann lists all dates and venues, with registration, on its German website.

Heat pumps have overtaken gas

The timing reflects a real shift in the German heating market. According to the sales statistics of the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH), 299,000 heating heat pumps were sold in Germany in 2025. Gas heat generators came to 276,500 units. In new sales, the heat pump is no longer the alternative to gas; it is ahead of it.

What visitors can see

Two units take centre stage. The Vitocal 250-A is an air-to-water heat pump that Stiftung Warentest, the German consumer testing foundation, has named test winner twice, in the version with 10 kW nominal heat output (type AWO-E AC 251.A10). At the Viessmann branches, visitors can also see the new Vitocal 200-A ie in person. On site, the advisers explain which solution suits a particular building and how heat and electricity can work together efficiently within the home.

Viessmann was founded in 1917 as a manufacturer of heating technology. Today, as Viessmann Climate Solutions, it offers climate and renewable energy solutions and is part of Carrier Global Corporation.

How to get the most from a visit

A conversation with a specialist is most useful when you bring the figures that decide the outcome: your current heating consumption, the flow temperature your radiators need on a cold day and, if you have one, the annual yield of your solar roof. Our guides on air-to-water versus ground source heat pumps and on heat pumps in older homes help you prepare the right questions, and the heat pump calculator below gives a first estimate of running costs before you go.
